STYLE GUIDE No1. My Guide to Getting the Good Stuff in Buenos Aires

Note* For those of you have been keeping up with the blog, you know that this is my second attempt at a Where-To-Shop Buenos Aires Guide. On my original visit I had a tragic mishap with my camera's memory card and lost all of my photos, hence the style guide was placed on hold. This time I went back and BA is even more amazing at second glance. My love affair with this place plunged me deeper into the under belly of the city and what I found was a vitalizing spirit that was hard to ignore. In short...I love this place, its infectious energy speaks directly to my heart.

Barrio: San Telmo

If you have read anything that I have written in the past two weeks then you are somewhat familiar with the BA neighborhood, San Telmo. It is home to my favorite market, Mercado de San Pedro Telmo and one of the deepest anchors that ties my heart to this city. Full of life, artisans, and music, Sunday is the best day to experience this area. The excitement of this weekly feria begins around 10am and goes until night fall. For the best route start at Defensa & Av. Belgrano and follow Defensa down until Plaza Dorrego. Lined with street artisans and vintage dealers these cobbled streets are also the entrances to grand paseos that are filled with antique and vintage stalls. It is almost like a new world is hidden inside every corner that you turn. A few new and second-hand stores that are also on this path are definitely worth checking out. Make sure that you visit the actual Mercado de San Telmo, a grand indoor market located on Bolivar & Carlos Calvo. Filled with everything from meats and vegetables to expensive jewelry, this market is nothing short of overwhelming. Because the indoor market is open daily, I recommend revisiting during the week to really get a closer look at the stalls (on week days stalls open in the late afternoon).
*See and read more about my San Telmo finds at my flea market blog NiLeAP FLeA

A few addresses of surrounding shops that are a must see:
El Rufián Melancólico ♥
Bolivar 857

A dramatically exciting used bookstore complete with life-size ghouls, goblins, and characters of all sorts. Piled high with stacks, heaps, and rows of old books, vintage records, post cards, movie posters and even some risqué media, this shop is worth checking out. The shopkeepers are pleasant and quite charming. They will even put on some bossa nova and twirl around the store with you...if you are lucky.

Sistema "Luis" ♥♥
Carlos Calvo 487

This man is a shoe legend who has been fabricating shoes and boots for as long as he can remember. He is quite a character and his shoes are equally as interesting. Do not be fooled by the dusty shoes that line the shelves and window as this gem can easily be missed. Normally it takes about 15 days to complete so try to visit him early on in your trip. He also keeps very weird hours. Monday through Saturday, he opens from 7am-1:30pm. He then goes home to lunch and nap and returns from 4pm to 9pm. On Sundays he is open from 10am to 2pm.

La Fundemental Sombreros ♥♥
Dr. J. M. Guiffra 370

Handmade hats from every era. Toppers, bowlers, fedoras, feathered discs, and much much more. Some are made to order and others you can take right off the rack. The owner has a weekly stall outside in Plaza Dorrego on Sundays but he definitely saves his best inventory for his shop. I found a amazing velvet number that I will put on ice until warranted by the proper event...New Years perhaps.

Silvia Papagno ♥♥♥
Defensa 950-Local 89

One of the nicest vendors that I ever encountered, Silva Papagno was one of my favorite stalls in the entire market. I ended up revisiting her during the week because I was too overwhelmed by the time I arrived to her booth on Sunday. She has rows of little knick-nacs, jewelry, and handbags. I visited her booth a total of three times before I was finally able to see everything and make a decision. The score.. A large leather handbag, filigree silver bow tie pin, two pairs of earrings and a brooch. I love them all!

El Buen Orden ♥♥♥
Defensa 894

A indescribable vintage utophia...impeccabbly done. You have to see this one for yourself!

Antiquedades (Pablo) ♥
Bolivar 929
Mainly antiques with a splash of clothes. He has tons of vintage cameras, glassware, and curios filled with old jewelry that are fun to dig through. Surprisingly this is the only place that I purchased vintage clothing from. Crammed in a suitcase that was hidden in a corner, five pesos for all clothing in the case....score!

Barrio: Palermo

Any proper shopping guide to Buenos Aires will tell you to make a stop in Palermo where people come to see and be seen. Slightly cheesy, it reminds me a bit of Florida South Beach style shopping but there are a few shops that are definitely a cut above the rest.

A Y Not Dead ♥
Soler 4193

With a "NY East Village-esque" vibe, this is were the young rich and spoiled crowd comes to get a slice of punk and euro-trash. The sales kids are all up on the latest music and club scene (techno is huge here). They all wear brightly colored sneakers and tight jeans. It was like a scene out of a movie to watch the girl behind the counter smack her gum and twirl her hair with a image of Vincent Gallo screen printed on her tee... I absolutely loved it! $200 pesos later I was outta there with a black deep-v frock that I almost stopped traffic in when I wore it in NY.

Mishka ♥♥♥
El Salvador 4673 y Armenia

These shoes here are really special. The fabrics and the cuts are extremely feminine and oh so enticing. It is hard to leave with just one pair. Some styles come in both a high heel and a lower version...these people really know what they are doing!

Vickiotero ♥♥
El Salvador 4719

Be careful not to blink or you may miss this tiny little sliver of a boutique. Small and clean, this boutique is packed with looks that are smart and sharp. If there is any type of Swedish community in Buenos Aires, this is their place. A little on the expensive side the pieces are well tailored and timeless. Consider it an investment.

Lara Bernasconi ♥
Malabia 1753

A lovely selection of shoes and handbags. This shop is a bit of work to enter as you must climb a steep flight of stairs, ring a buzzer, and wait to let in, only to climb another flight of stairs into the shop. Whew! I am not sure if the shoes or the flight that was breathtaking but I was surprised at the selection of delicacies that filled the showroom floor. Definitely worth the trip. Certain styles can be ordered to make if the shop if out of stock.

Sabater Hermanos♥♥♥♥
Gurruchaga 1821

A friend turned me on to this store before I left for my first visit to BA. Its like a brightly colored candy store filled with flavored soaps all made on the premises. On my first visit I bought about 6 bars just to test it out. This time I lost count of how many bars I had to jam into my suitcase, several for me and a couple for mom. The soaps come in fun little shapes and confetti style as well. They do not have a online store set up but maybe I can email when I run out...fingers crossed.

Barrio: Recoletta

I must admit that I did not spend much time in this area. I stopped in a few shops as I was passing through and quickly picked up on a Rodeo Drive sort of vibe. This is typically not my scene as I tend to be a little less frilly with my shopping. I was however tempted by a few stores that really had great things to offer. Here are a few addresses if you are ever feeling a little "Julia Roberts" in Pretty Woman and want to see what is on this side of town.

Josefina Ferroni
Armenia 1471

A fun collection of exotic shoes that a stunning and wearable all at once. It is the perfect mix of function meets outer space. The prices are as expected in this neighborhood but the quality completely warrants it.

Walton & Walton
Arenales 1409
Stuffy as hell and the clothing was not much to look at but they had a bag in there that was to die for. But that was about it. If you a passing by maybe it will still be there or an even better one. Definitely not worth making a special trip for.

Sofi Martire
Uruguay 1250
www.sofimartire.com.ar
They actually stock some very nice shoes but the presentation is disappointing and takes away from the quality. If you approach this store with this in mind then you can really identify some great peices. Take a deep breath and cleanse your mental style palette before entering.

Barrio: Plaza de Mayo & Neighboring areas

Paseo de La Resistencia ♥♥♥♥♥
Av. de Mayo 649

This place is particularly close to my heart for so many reasons and is another thing that ties my heart to Buenos Aires. In terms of shopping I think that it offers some of the most amazing crafts that I have ever seen. All hand made by the local artists within the space, the craftsmanship is impeccable and prices are reasonable considering the amount of work that goes into this art. The artists here love what they do and survive on this skill. I do not recommend leaving BA without visiting this paseo.
I also want to mention that this is the place that finally after two years of searching for the perfect leather bag black bag, I finally found it here. Artist, Soledad Ferreyra handcrafted this tooled leather bag to my specifications. Three days later I had this beautiful bag that quickly became my staple winter piece. This bag is dark and romantic and a total representation of how I feel at this moment. Soledad Ferreyra can be reached at cueryarte@yahoo.com.ar

Argentinan Shoes♥♥
Av. Corrientes 805
www.argentinianshoes.com
Colorful, amazing, leather shoes. It can seem a little "Golden Girls" in the beginning...but give it a second look. I left with two pairs.

Arandu ♥♥♥
Paraguay 1259
Totally ranch style, this authentic riding store stocks boots and classic ranch wear on all three floors. The prices are super high but the quality is topnotch. I got a pair of riding boots that fit my calf like a dream. These boots are timeless and I will love them forever.

El Talero♥
Florida 362 -Local 14
In the same vein as Arandu, this gaucho style shop stocks authentic accessories with hardware details that are stunning. The belts are my favorite thing in this shop.

Gloria the best♥♥♥
Getting a manicure and a pedicure in this tiny beauty shop is an all day affair..especially if you ask for Carmen. Its like I took a time machine back to the 80's and ended up at this shop. Recommended to me by an frequent BA visitor, this was my most relaxing manicure ever. Not to be rushed this woman takes her time and does it old school style. Note* If you would like more than three colors of Revlon polish (circa 1980) to choose from then I suggest bringing your own. 30 pesos for a mani & pedi.

Happy Birthday DJ 1963

Happy Birthday January 1963. Sorry I missed it babe.

New News from Newport

Is it just me or has Newport News been trying to step their game up lately? Normally not a fan, I decided to give the site a peek after I saw a pair of satin booties featured in Lucky Magazine for $39.00. While they are beautiful at first glance, I am a little suspicious of the comfort and quality levels. I continued to browse around and noticed a few items that can help to jazz up any holiday look. At these prices they could be worth the gamble.
Satin Bootie $39.00

Shoe Boot $29.00

wool felt cloche $24.00

Lace Gloves $15.00

Flea update

This month I am offering a small collection of vintage charms on black satin bow necklaces. They are charming and of course romantic. My customers like to layer them with different silver or gold chains for tougher edge. Only a few still remaining at the FLEA $25.00

The Twilight Zone

As I move closer to the holidays my wardrobe seems to be getting darker and darker. Today I wore all black... for anyone who knows me, that is a complete shocker. This is were my evolution has landed me these days, I love anything that is dark and sexy. It started with black ankle booties, then came the revival of a black cropped vintage leather jacket, and of course the ultimate black leather bag. I switched from navy to black eyeliner and voilà...I am ready for battle. Of course in a effort to remain dark and romantic versus dark and gothic, I have turned to playful accessories to lighten the mood and maintain my nostaglic aura. Hence, I entered the Twilight Zone...with parisan accessory designer Marie-amélie Verdu, I have found my fix for playful accessories that are still amazingly beautiful and striking. A few of my favorites are:

Check out more from Marie at LandofTwilight.com.
The site is super cute and completley D.I.Y... even more reason to love her. Don't miss the graphics designed by her sister Charlotte Verdu. This girl is a wicked artist that has created club posters and flyers all over Paris.

What's for dinner tonight?

Style obsessed, vintage scavenger, and travel addict, you can also add petite cuisinier to my repertoire.  In my efforts to save a bit of cash, I have been cooking every night this week. I often cook and actually enjoy doing it but I have been over doing the takeout lately and want to reaquaint myself with the kitchen. Having just returned from Argentina and with the recent purchase a ticket to Paris,  I think its about time that I tighten the purse strings a bit. This week I prepared lamb & curry potatos, shrimp udon, beef chilli, and salmon & bok choy. Each time I was in and out of the kitchen within an hour and enjoyed my culinary experience.  Here is what happened with the Salmon & Bok Choy:
What I used:
1lb salmon fillet
1lb baby bok choy
White Vinegar
Olive Oil
Garlic
1 lemon
Sea Salt
Fresh black pepper
Red Onion

Rinse the salmon in vinegar and squeeze over 1/2 lemon...*I like to do this to kill the fishy smell.
Coat a baking pan with a teaspoon of Olive oil and place fillet on the pan
Season with sea salt & black pepper
Cover compeltely with whole garlic cloves. *peel and smash cloves...do not chop.
Layer on thinnly sliced red onion

Cover in foil and bake for apprx 45 minutes (my oven is old and gets really hot so I set to 375)

*After 30 minutes remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes

Throughly rinse bok choy. Break the clusters apart as you rinse.

Coat the base of a frying pan/pot with olive oil. Heat slighty.
Add in about 4-5 cloves of finely chopped garlic

Let simmer for about 30 seconds before adding the bok choy.
Immedaitly add 2nd half of lemon. Squeeze over.
Let simmer and constantly stir until bok choy appears soft and saturated.

Add salt to taste.
A glass or red wine and you are set.

Note* I like to save the lemon rines to wipe down the surface after I have finshed cooking. This is a natural way to kill the lingering smell that fish, garlic, and onions can leave on surfaces.

Mad-hatter!

As top hats plunge their way back in vogue, suddenly my tattered top hat seems increasingly insignificant. My need to take it over the top draws me to the ever so famous Abe Lincoln ultimate topper. Am I ready for this? Is it too costumey? Will I be able to fit on the train? Huh!..for now I will just upgrade to a slighty higher hat until the fashion mavens push me to the ultimate Lincoln. Maybe I can find one in collapsable! In the mean time whatever your fancy get your fix at www.top-hats.com

The Evolution of the A+

Lately life has been happening just way too fast for me to keep up with documentation, not with exciting adventures filled with foreign travel and fashionable pleasures but rather real life tasks and obligations that lead to unexpected weeks of disappearance from your normal scene. Since the post of my last blog I have hosted a kick-ass Labor Day BBQ, traveled through swealtering heat of Sugarland, Texas for a wedding, spent a few days in Fhilty-delphia, and finally finished my submission for the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award. I have also managed to loose my favorite pair of gold Eiffel Tower earrings that I have worn solely for the past three years (tears & heartbreak), and a newly coveted pair of vintage Balenciaga oversized specs that I had just gotten as a birthday gift to myself (more tears and heartbreak). But as there is bright side to every dark moment I am twirling in excitement about the events to come. Yes!!!! A fashionable frontier mixed with a bit of travel...stay tuned.
Lets revisit for a moment the Ecco Domani fashion grant. Putting this submission together was a long but creative process. . I wanted to find a way to answer the questionaire and showcase my work in a manner that would be fun to look at and read. So I put together a scrapbook with tons of tape, markers, and glue..3rd grade art class meets high fashion, smeared with a bit of dark romance, just my style. It evolved many times before I was finally satisfied with the finish product. A special thanks to all of my professional references who happily came to my aid on this project. Particularly close to my heart is the uber cool street blogger and documentarist (1red balloon) who skillfully edited my submission before it went to press. My A is now a A+.
Now lets see if the Ecco Domani people agree.

Keeping Busy

Its been a quite some time since my last blog entry. I have been keeping busy all summer at a fun little project called NiLeA' P. FLEA. It is a small booth at the Brooklyn Flea Market that's like a mini vintage store within a ton of other vintage stalls. Every Sunday from 10am to 5pm. The flea goers are cute and ultra inspiring. I have been swept away in the weekly brigade of fashion forward sweethearts and their hipster boyfriends. Tattoo galore...at the flea I have seen everything tattooed from shelves of library books and paper mache birds to a diagram of a fully labeled human heart complete with arteries and muscles (that one remains my favorite.) I have even had a bit of time to slip away with my parents to South America for few weeks. Unfortunately I had a catastrophic experience with my camera so I lost all of my pictures and can not share pics on the blog. Needless to say I returned with tons of leather goodies and jewelry. I have many new obsessions for the fall to come. My dad is going to send me his copies of the photos so maybe I still put together a mini "where to" fashion guide for Buenos Aires and Salvador, Bahia. Stay tuned.
In the mean time check out more photos and blogs from the flea at myspace.com/nileapvinatge

Backstage at the ULS photoshoot

5/3/08
8AM: I wake up, shower, dress, and draw a heart on my face. Today is the day of the ULS photoshoot. I have been going crazy planning this for weeks and now stylists are making their way to Brooklyn.
10AM: All the stylists have arrived and are set up. The first of models start pouring in. Brittany a spunky sweetheart from Trump Models is the first to arrive. I love her look, tight jeans, Urban Outfitters tee, and dirty converse. She has a boyish charm that will translate well on the camera. Lets get her to make-up ASAP.
12PM: By now we are in full swing. The food is out, all the models have arrived and make-up and hair is well underway. Chiahci the stylist on set has run into a bit of trouble, none of the models can fit into the denim pants from the line. I give my good friend Candice a call, she is a free-spirited beauty from Brooklyn with wild curly hair and most importantly the perfect bum for the job. She swings by after her arial training and slides right into make-up. Thanks for the favor Candice!
2PM: The shoot is going great and lunch is about to be served. Crews, the hair techican powers up a million watt hairdryer that blows the entire circuit in the wardrobe area. After a trip to the hardware store, and serveral lamps and extension cords later we were able to restore a bit of light in the wardrobe area and the manic blowdrying moves to the kitchen (the only circuit in the house powerful enough to handle the wattage.) Lunch moves to the living room and everyone gathers for a little rest and BLTs. Jasmine the woman preparing the food for the shoot is amazing and totally flexiable. The crew crowded around her like a mom cooking southern breakfast. The atmosphere is exactly what ULS is all about.
4PM: We are wrapping up the final looks and Champion the photographer is stopping to empty his memory card. The models are hanging out and shoot has moved to outside. The the scenes are so beautiful and nostalgic the perfect backdrop to a love story.
6PM: The crew has left and I am cleaning up the debris from the shoot. The photographer burns the last of the discs and he begins to pack up. What a perfect day..its all coming together so magically.♥
Note to self* call an electrician tomorrow.

The beat of my heart's heart.

With so much vigor, vengeance, and emotion comes my expression of all that I believe in. Words can not describe but rather gasps of stolen breath is what I feel when I lay eyes on the finished project. Every single detail down to the smallest stitch is the equivalent to a pump of my heart. Feel my pulse this fall with the release of Underground Love Story. I have never been in love like this before.

The Conundrum of Cool

This months issue of BPM is like the handbook of every single young, progressive, "cool" kid in New York City. It is the hipsters survival guide that should be issued with every new apartment rental in Willamsburg, Brooklyn. My favorite is the article, Conundrum of Cool, if the author Amy Buesing does not hit it on the head then she comes as close as one can. She defines the "hipster" though an interesting explanation of origin, evaluation, and present state. If the aloof, tight pants wearing, trendy club kid/artist/"too cool for school" individual remains an enigma for you then this article shall help to untangle the debacle. Mystery solved!!!!

Téhéran Disco

After recently seeing the movie Persepolis, I downloaded the soundtrack. Listening to it while riding my bike makes me feel as if I am floating on a magical island filled with circus animals that are wearing tutus and playing musical instruments. It is sad, dramatic, strange, and happy all in one album. It is perfect for the wandering mind and probably not the best music for me to be listening to while riding my bike, but what is mortality in comparison to a magical bike ride? Here is one of my favorite scenes from the movie.

Lilies of the Field (1963)

Quite possibly one of my favorite films of all time. God, they don't make 'em like Sidney anymore! Even Oprahs in love. I am too!

I ♥ Cédric

Every Saturday morning I find myself being careful not to miss Cédric, a cartoon about the daily life of an 8 year french boy and his growing pains. He is in love with an Asian girl named Chen and he writes about his admiration for her (amongst other things) in his diary. His best comrade is his grandfather, PéPé, who helps Cédric through his trials with his parents and schoolmates. It is incredibly interesting and even as an adult I am entertained. It is funny how foreign children's cartoons seem to deal with more realistic issues like love, desire, and expression of emotion as opposed to American cartoons. Growing up I remember watching Belle and Sebastian, a classic anime adaptation based on a series of French novels by Cécile Aubry that aired on Nickelodeon. During that time it was one of the only cartoons centered around constant adventure full of love and pain. For me, it helped to illustrate a more realistic view of the world that was to come.

Belle & Sebastian
